Sharing the Nokia N95′s internet connection with OS X in 5 easy steps

Connected via Bluetooth

Tomorrow I’m on the road, visiting some business associates and some friends. Whilst on the road, I still want to check my emails and, if neccessary, log on to our servers.Keeping up with my mail is easy: the N95 has a perfect IMAP client that allows me to just fetch the headers. All I needed to do was set up the MacBook to acces the internet through the N95, using Bluetooth. Guess what: couldn’t be easier!

No really, I’m not joking:

Pick the appropriate phone from the list
  1. Activate Bluetooth in OS X and at the N95. Best result: pair the two of ‘em in the N95′s menu (Tools – Bluetooth – Pairing )
  2. Set-up the N95 in OS X’ Bluetooth menu. To do this, click the Bluetooth icon and pick “Set up Bluetooth device”
  3. A popup with available devices shows (see second screenshot). Pick the N95 and continue to the next menu.
  4. Fill out the connection settings, such as a username and/or password. Tip: Check out this page if you don’t know your settings. Not listed? Ask Google, they seem to know a lot.
  5. Using your System Preferences, the Network part, click your Bluetooth adapter and hit “Connect”. Voila, you’re online, ready to do your thing!

That’s fine but what about the other way round? Macs can share their wired connection easily via the Airport. Other macs and PCs can connect, however, I never can get the N95 to connect through wifi.

Any clues?

Hi Eduardo,

Thanx for your comment. I’ve tried sharing the connection the other way around, but I’m not convinced of the quility of the connection. The only way it seemed to work a little bit, was without any encryption. I’ll try again soon(ish)!

[...] As mentioned in an earlier post, Mac OS X and the N95 can team up pretty good whilst connecting to the internet. While the latter post was about using the N95 as an access point, this one is about exactly the reverse. When you don’t have a decent data program or you don’t have Wi-Fi in your house, you could use your Mac as an access point to your N95. Only problem: it’s not reliable. [...]

I am extremely inspired together with your writing talents and also with the format for your blog. Is this a paid topic or did you customize it your self? Either way stay up the nice high quality writing, it’s rare to look a great weblog like this one these days..
