Sharing Mac OS X’s internet connection with the Nokia N95 in 5 easy steps

Connection Sharing

You can choose to set a password with WEP encryption, but the N95 won’t take it

As mentioned in an earlier post, Mac OS X and the N95 can team up pretty good whilst connecting to the internet. While the latter post was about using the N95 as an access point, this one is about exactly the reverse. When you don’t have a decent data program or you don’t have Wi-Fi in your house, you could use your Mac as an access point to your N95. Only problem: it’s not reliable.

Are you sure?

OS X gives out a security warning that tells you others can connect through your Mac now.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. In the System Preferences, choose Sharing.
  2. In the left menu, select the line named “Internet Sharing”. At the right, choose an Incoming connection (in this case: Ethernet) and an interface to share it through. In this case, that would be the AirPort.
  3. Hit the button labeled “AirPort Options”. Here, fill out the form specifying the SSID and the WEP password.
  4. Once filled out, tick the box next to “Internet Sharing”. A warning is shown.
  5. Voila, you’re done! Your Mac is acting as an access point.

One note though: the N95 claims it needs to verify the key, before accepting it. I haven’t figured out how that works. Also, without (temporary) a password, it returns the error “Gateway not responding”. Therefore, I don’t use it this way. Same issues occur while trying to hook up the Wii this way, where both the Wii and the N95 connect without a problem with my router. That’s also using WEP encryption.

And yes, I know WEP isn’t as safe as WPA, but to hook up all devices, I need to find an encryption that all devices can cope with. All devices being:

  • Nintendo Wii
  • Nokia N95 (mobile device using Symbian)
  • Apple MacBook Pro
  • HP iPAQ RW 6815 (mobile device using Windows Mobile)

I found that WEP is currently giving me the least problems.
