Enabling 5.1 S/PDIF on XBMC

Screenshot of The Dark Knight in 1080P, telling me that digital sound doesn't work...

Just got myself a new receiver and that made me finally want to enable 5.1 sound on my mediacenter. I tried a LOT of tutorials, to finally find out the solution was quite simple…

I tried upgrading Alsa, according to this post on XBMC but did not manage to enable it. It was a post on Ubuntuforums that gave me hope. If mplayer could give me surround through S/Pdif, then XBMC should be able to do it, right?

I’ve never read it, but the the solution was in disabling the navigation sounds for the menu! When I re-enable the sounds, surround doesn’t work, when I disable the sounds, surround sound through the room. I’ve added screenshots of the settings as well.
